Last week we read "East of The Sun, West of The Moon" from the Blue Fairy Book. It's a tale about a Princess who travels among the winds to her Prince. This is Alejandro's description of his visual narration: "The East, South, and West winds are going to meet the North wind. The girl is the Princess going to the castle, she is getting blown there. The East Wind is pink, the South wind is the yellow, and the West wind is the gray, and the North wind is the blue."
This is what Alejandro has been working on today during quiet moments in between school work. They are characters in some sort of game he is interested in called "Fortress Under Siege".
This term we are focusing on teaching the following geography concepts: Fixed direction (north, south, east, west). The sun shows direction: East is where the sun rises, west is where it sets. Stars (North or Pole Star, constellations) show direction and help mariners find their way. The length and direction of shadows can help us tell time as well as direction.
As we were discussing stars and the constellations Alejandro was interested in the planets and so we found this worksheet. He's always thought of Pluto as a planet, so I've had to explain to him that Pluto is no longer considered a planet.
